Singer-songwriter, educator, and community advocate Carl Brister has built a career that blends artistry with service, using music not only to entertain but also to educate, inspire, and strengthen communities.
From appearances on NBC’s Access Hollywood, ABC’s Here and Now, BET, and Aspire, to first-round Grammy ballot recognition for his rendition of Janet Jackson’s “Let’s Wait Awhile” and his Country single “Will Be Spring Again,” Carl’s journey reflects a remarkable commitment to both music and people.

Some of our readers may already know Carl’s music. Others may be discovering him for the first time. Either way, there’s much more to his story than what can be heard on a single recording.

Carl is an international recording artist whose work spans Soul, R&B, Pop, Country, and other musical styles. Yet what makes his story especially compelling is that his influence extends beyond his recording career.
He is also a licensed New Jersey educator who has served as a teacher, instructional coach, interventionist, and educational specialist. His experience in both education and music allows him to introduce younger generations to the history, emotional depth, and cultural significance of Soul music in engaging and meaningful ways.
One example is “Feel It. Sing It. Live It! The Story of Soul Music & You,” an interactive educational program that introduces students to the rich legacy of Soul music through live performance, storytelling, singing, movement, and audience participation.
Rather than presenting Soul music as something confined to history, the program encourages students to see music as a powerful form of communication and self-expression. It also inspires them to explore songwriting, collaboration, and the value of sharing their own stories through music.
That educational approach immediately connected with what we value at DLK Soul.
Our brand celebrates the warmth, honesty, and musical richness of Soul and R&B while recognizing the importance of helping new generations understand where this music came from, how it evolved, and why its influence continues to shape artists today.
Carl’s commitment to that mission becomes even more evident through Music Village, the nonprofit organization he founded and leads.
Music Village is a 501(c)(3) organization that uses the performing arts to strengthen communities, encourage diversity, and support organizations and leaders creating positive change. Its mission also includes promoting financial literacy, improving access to information, and creating wealth-building opportunities for artists and underserved communities.
This is far more than an organization that presents performances.
Music Village views the arts as a platform for education, opportunity, and meaningful community connection.
One of its best-known initiatives is Love+Unity Fest, the free annual community festival Carl founded in 2016. The event brings together artists representing Soul, Gospel, R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop, Rock, Latin, Reggae, and many other genres, creating a family-friendly celebration centered on unity through music.
Music Village also supports aspiring musicians through scholarship opportunities that help cover instruments, private lessons, summer music programs, and collegiate music studies. The philosophy is simple: when communities invest in artists, those artists are better equipped to invest back into their communities.
That philosophy strongly resonates with us.
DLK was created not only to celebrate great music but also to build platforms that highlight artists, organizations, and ideas that inspire positive change. Music Village’s combination of artistic expression, education, and community service reflects many of the same values that continue to guide our work.
It is also why I am honored to serve on Music Village’s Board of Advisors.
My involvement comes from a genuine belief in the organization’s mission and an understanding of how important encouragement, education, and practical support are for developing artists. Talent matters, but talent also needs opportunity.
Young musicians need access to instruments, quality instruction and mentorship. Most importantly, they need people willing to help them navigate both the creative and professional sides of the industry. They need examples of artists who remain connected to their communities while using their platforms responsibly.
Music Village is helping create exactly that kind of environment.
Serving on the Board of Advisors allows me to contribute to a mission that views the arts not as an isolated pursuit but as a powerful tool to educate, unite, and empower people. Carl’s team has also recognized DLK’s commitment to building platforms that celebrate music capable of inspiring, uplifting, and transforming lives.
