Father's Day is a time to reflect on the influence and legacy of our dads. For many, this day brings back memories of guidance, love, and the lessons that have shaped our lives.

For Carl Brister, a renowned singer, songwriter, producer, and the driving force behind Music Village & The Love+Unity Fest, Father's Day is a poignant reminder of his father's indelible impact on his musical career and values.

In a recent interview, Carl shared heartfelt stories and wisdom from his father. He reminded us of the importance of family, perseverance, and creative expression.

Early Years: From R&B Slow Jams to Mixtape Beats

From a young age, Carl was immersed in an environment where music was not just a form of entertainment but a way of life. “My father was the bedrock of my musical inspiration,” Carl recalls.

As a musician and Hip-Hop DJ, his father's love for music was palpable, and Carl was eager to follow in his footsteps. Carl fondly recalls the eclectic mix of music that filled their home.
“My dad's music collection was incredibly diverse,” Carl reminisces. From Nat King Cole to LL Cool J, something was always playing in the background. This exposure laid the foundation for Carl's diverse style. This typically includes a fusion of R&B, Neo-Soul, and Jazz.

Beyond mere entertainment, Carl's father played a pivotal role in nurturing his musical talent. “He would always have me sing at shows, family gatherings, backyard barbeques, you name it. I think the more experience I gained, the better I got. ” Carl shares.

Despite Carl's burgeoning passion for music, his father initially encouraged him to pursue music as a side passion rather than a full-time career. This is because he was well aware of the challenges inherent in the industry. “I think stability is something most fathers would want for their kids. Now that I'm a dad, I can understand it better now,” Carl reflects.

Nevertheless, his father's unwavering support and guidance instilled in Carl a desire to explore it further. Carl fondly recalls his first NYC performance. “My dad rented a charter bus to bring people from our hometown to the show. The bus ride became an unforgettable ‘after party' celebration.”

This act became a symbol of his father's unwavering belief in Carl's talent and his commitment to supporting his son's musical aspirations. It was a defining moment in Carl's journey, affirming his passion for music and setting the stage for his future endeavors.

Challenges and Overcoming Obstacles

Carl's journey has not been without its challenges. One particularly memorable lesson came during a family trip to Niagara Falls. Amidst a sudden storm, Carl wanted to pull over, but his father encouraged him to “keep driving.”

This metaphorical lesson in perseverance has stuck with Carl throughout his career. “Whenever I feel discouraged or like things are not happening as planned, I remember this lesson,” Carl shares. It has helped him push through difficult times and focus on his goals.

Creative Inspiration

Like his music, his father’s legacy deeply influences Carl’s creative process. He has written several popular songs inspired by his relationship with his father. These include “Chariots and Horses” from his first album and “Keep Driving',” which reflects the lesson his father taught him during that stormy drive.

“I strive to create a balance in my music, ensuring it's not always serious,” Carl explains. His father’s emphasis on joy and entertainment continues to influence Carl’s approach to songwriting and performance. It constantly reminds him to create music that uplifts and entertains.

Reflecting on his father's commitment to providing for his family despite his own father's absence, Carl is reminded of the importance of being there for his children.

On Father's Day, Carl plans to honor his father by spending quality time with his sons. “I think that's the best way to honor my dad—by being present and appreciating the moment with my sons,” Carl shares. In embracing his role as both a musician and a father, Carl exemplifies the enduring bond between family and career.

Balancing Family and Career

Balancing a music career with family responsibilities is no easy task. Carl explains that he prioritizes his role as a father first. “Family and fatherhood come first,” Carl states.

Still, he sometimes has to make tough choices about being away for performances. He always tries to explain the reasons behind these absences to his sons. Ultimately, being present in their lives is his top priority.

Legacy and Future: Shaping the Next Generation

Carl hopes to pass on his father’s legacy to his children and the next generation of musicians. “My father's entrepreneurial spirit inspired me to own my music and words,” Carl explains.

He recalls his father's sage advice. One piece of advice that has stuck with him is the importance of getting agreements in writing—a lesson that has become a guiding principle in his own career.

Through his non-profit, Carl encourages ownership and self-determination- values he learned from his father.

Reflecting on his career, Carl believes his father would be proud of his efforts to raise his sons and his community work through The Love+Unity Fest. “This initiative is a continuation of the inclusivity he fostered as a DJ,” Carl explains. This enables him to uphold his father's vision of bringing people together through music.
