Doechii, born Jaylah Hickmon, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Tampa Florida. She developed a passion for the arts from an early age, writing her first rap verse in sixth grade for her talent show. To hone her skills, Doechii joined Howard W. Blake School of the Arts in the ninth grade. During her time at the school and on track to go to college, she would get to learn about SoundCloud and the DIY music scene from a friend. Shortly after, Doechii released her first song “Girls” on SoundCloud in 2016, officially immersing herself in the indie scene. This was followed by the single “Spookie Coochie” in 2019. However, it wasn’t until 2020 that Doechii rose to prominence thanks to her single “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake.” In 2022, she signed a contract with Top Dawg Entertainment, joining a roster of artists like SZA and Kendrick Lamar.

Despite being an upcoming artist, Jaylah Hickmon is already drawing comparisons to her idols SZA, Nicki Minaj, and Azealia Banks. Their influence on her music is undeniable. Nevertheless, she still manages to distinguish herself as an artist, infusing her music with some southern and aughts-era flair. Doechii is always pressing herself to improve and this earned her recognition as MTV’s Push Artist for July 2022. Her talent is undeniable, constantly proving why you need to keep her on your radar.
